Challenges and prospects for electricity prices in Poland

Poland currently faces important decisions regarding electricity prices, which until the end of June 2024 will remain at the level from the beginning of 2022. However, whether the government will decide to extend this "freeze" on prices or introduce new protective measures for consumers remains an open question. Currently, there is no official

information on the continuation of lower prices, although the Minister of Climate and Environment, Paulina Hennig-Kloska, suggests initial solutions aimed at protecting the most vulnerable households in the second half of 2024, related to electricity prices.

Current situation

The act of December 7, 2023 guarantees that electricity prices for households will remain unchanged until the end of June 2024. Current prices are lower than tariffs in energy markets, which is beneficial for consumers.

Consumption limits and maximum prices

Households have set limits on electricity consumption which, if exceeded, result in paying a fixed maximum price for energy. By mid-2024, there are also maximum gas prices and solutions protecting heat prices for selected recipients.

Prospects for the future

Minister Hennig-Kloska suggests that new solutions may be introduced in the second half of 2024 to protect the most vulnerable households. However, there is no specific information on how consumers will be safeguarded after the current regulations expire.

Proposals to reduce the VAT rate

In the context of rising energy costs, there have been proposals to reduce the VAT rate on electricity from 23% to 5%. This could help alleviate financial burdens for consumers, but no decision has yet been made on this matter.

Summary

Poland faces the challenge of maintaining stable electricity prices while securing the needs of the most vulnerable consumers. Despite the uncertainty regarding the government's future actions, there is hope for the introduction of effective solutions aimed at protecting consumer interests in the face of rising costs

of energy. Ultimately, the situation will continue to be monitored, and government decisions will significantly impact the budgets of Polish households and businesses.
